What a Difficult Year!

2011 will not go down in my mind as a year to remember but certainly as a year from which to learn. We live in a time of increasing volatility with short term stockmarket movements which are increasingly difficult to predict and seem to include no rational elements. We are increasingly being driven by short term crisis and news reports which create oscillations that seem to be reversed before  any trend is established. Such is the level of fear and the hunger for good news that the herd stampedes first in one direction then another. It has to be remembered that the normal investing principles still apply....the world of investing hasn’t been reinvented.....value and fundamentals will dictate the medium term direction irrespective of the talking heads on CNBC or wherever. There seems to be a consensus that 2012 will be more favourable to precious metal prices  as they come out of the correction that marked the latter half of 2011 and prices ranging from U$2200 to US3000 are anticipated. As recent fund valuations show, our funds rose 6.5% to the mid point in the year but fell thereafter to record a flat year with no discernable direction. The hoped for recovery didn’t come at the end of the year but started in earnest  in January as has happened several times in the past 12 years.
